Madras High Court Declares Grindr App Illegal Due to Misuse in Criminal Activities
Court Recommends Blocking the App Over Sexual Abuse and Robbery Allegations
The Madras High Court has recently labeled the popular LGBTQ dating app, Grindr, as illegal, citing its misuse in facilitating criminal activities. This decision emerged during a bail hearing for an accused individual who allegedly used the app to lure a victim to a secluded location, where he sexually abused and robbed him.
The court observed that while the app caters to the LGBTQ community, it is primarily being exploited for prurient and sexual interests, which makes it a tool for committing offenses. Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy emphasized that the app’s illegality stems not from its association with homosexuality but from its misuse for illegal activities.
Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology Urged to Take Action
In light of the allegations, the court has urged the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology to consider appropriate measures, including the potential blocking of the Grindr app in accordance with the law. The court stressed the need for swift action to prevent further misuse of the app for criminal purposes.
The accused, Maharaja, was granted bail on the condition that he deletes the Grindr app, refrains from using any social media, and voluntarily surrenders his mobile phone. Additionally, he must inform the police if he purchases a new device. The court set his bail at ₹10,000 with two sureties.
Conclusion:
The ruling by the Madras High Court highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding the misuse of dating apps like Grindr for illegal activities. By urging the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology to take action, the court aims to curtail the app’s potential as a tool for criminal behavior, reinforcing the importance of digital safety and legal compliance in online interactions.
