Trespassing and Theft: A Closer Look at the Incidents
A 22-year-old Berlin resident, Hayden Anderson, is facing serious accusations from the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Civil Rights Unit. Anderson is accused of repeatedly stealing LGBTQ+ pride flags from a residential property, actions that prosecutors claim violate the state’s Civil Rights Act.
Series of Thefts
Court documents reveal that Anderson trespassed onto the same property on three separate occasions in 2023. On June 17, August 5, and September 8, Anderson was captured on surveillance footage ripping down pride flags. During the initial incident, Anderson, accompanied by an unidentified individual, also took a Satanic Temple flag and a Ukrainian flag. Both individuals had their faces covered during the theft.
Legal Consequences
Prosecutors have filed a complaint alleging that Anderson’s actions were motivated by hate and discrimination, thus violating the Civil Rights Act. Each violation carries a potential fine of $5,000. In addition to financial penalties, prosecutors are seeking to bar Anderson from being within 350 feet of the victims’ homes or places of employment.
Attorney General’s Statement
“Acts of hate, intolerance, and discrimination, like those alleged in this case, have no place in New Hampshire,” stated Attorney General John Formella. “They undermine the basic rights of individuals to express themselves freely.” Formella emphasized the importance of protecting the right to peacefully express beliefs without fear of targeted harassment or intimidation.
Background and Arrest
Following the thefts, Anderson was identified by Berlin Police and admitted to the crimes during an interview. He was arrested in October and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal charges. Six stolen flags were found in his possession.
Community Response
Members of the local community and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have expressed outrage and concern over the incidents. The Attorney General’s Office highlighted the need to address and combat such acts of hate to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.
Ongoing Investigation
The case continues to develop as state officials and law enforcement work to hold Anderson accountable for his actions. The prosecution aims to send a clear message that hate-motivated crimes will not be tolerated in New Hampshire.
As of Thursday afternoon, Anderson could not be reached for comment. The investigation into his accomplice and the broader implications of the thefts remains ongoing.
